Question about rom types

Postby RenegadeFred » Tue Aug 13, 2013 5:13 pm

Just a few questions about some rom sets that I currently don't have access to until I donate.

Basically I'd like to know what the file type's are within the zip files of a few systems. PSX, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, and NEC Turbo Grafx CD. Example(s) .bin .cdi .cue

I'm sure some may tell me just to donate and find out. I understand that $10 may not sound like a lot to most people but for others, it may not be so easy to spend not knowing if said file's wont work for the setup.

I like to keep things uniformed and this site seems like it would be a great source in helping me finish my virtual collection. I really don't want to deal with two or more different file types when working with certain systems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I honestly do not know the enclosed file types for those systems, but I am almost 100% sure that bin/cue, iso, and cdi can all be easily converted between each other if need be. If you were to give me the OS you use, I can check out the info for converting them and post that here.
Looking through my personal collection (not from this site) my PSX roms are mixed between bin/cue and a couple each of IMG or ccd; but they all play fine in any emulator I have ever used (if that was a concern of yours) and all DreamCast roms I have seen are all cdi.
Sorry I cannot be of more assistance at this moment, but be assured 'Donate and Find Out' is not something you will find at this site, we look forward to helping people with anything we are able to at TOC, regardless of account status.

I appreciate the quick reply and your help on this subject. The PC I have set for all of the emulators and such is running a windows 7 x64 operating system.

All my PSX files are bin and cue also, but they all came from one source. I haven't attempted to find the missing games yet, but it's on my list of things to do.

As far as Dreamcast games go, I have seen some in other formats, that I have no clue on converting them and my current setup (thru a front end) utilizes the .cdi format.

depend on the system itself

ps1 mostly bin/cue and some iso or ccd.

if you want constant format you need a dump groups set.

i have most of the dreamcast set from tosec and all of them are pure dumps composed from bins and GDI.

thing is,most sites (read 90% ) don't have said sets.

alright, on Windows almost any of the disc authoring programs, such as Alcohol 120% or Magic Iso and perhaps Daemon Tools should be able to change any of the formats into the others. A load of a .img file on my personal machine with Alcohol 120% lets me convert to .mds, .ccd, .cue, and .iso by 'mounting' the image as a virtual disc with the program.

format convert is not on the same level as a dumped set.

sure you can convert but some data stored on different format is lost in the process or not there to begin with.

but like i said the only way to ensure proper format in constant set is to have full sets from dump groups.

tosec did amazing job on the dreamcast, unlike downscale cdi dumps, full gdi dumps can be played on full resolution without lower bit rate in both audio and video and such is the case with cdi dreamcast releases.

sadly most sites offer a mix of a lot of different dumps/rips/bad converts, and full sets are hard to come by on the big systems.

if you just need the game to play use any format given if you want to archive it go for dump groups, take in mind that those sets can be huge in size,I'm talking 1-3tb (1tb=1000gb) on some systems.. :freakout:
