FAQ: Picking the 'right' Emulator, some info.

Postby SE7EN » Sun Mar 31, 2013 5:15 pm

** Please do not ask your questions about roms/emulators in this thread. Make a new help thread topic for that. Keep replies in this thread to discussion about the original post. Thank You. **

What I am going to try to do is make 1 sticky post of the various emulators you can choose from, and what they do. That would be too much for one post, so I will just make separate ones for systems and link them here. I also do not have experience in a lot of them, so if you want to make a thread, list all the emulators for a system (like all SNES emulators that run on DOS) and a small description of them, then PM me it, I will add it to this first post, so it is easier to find :) instead of having to scroll through a lot of unsorted posts.

Windows:

Nintendo

-- GameCube + Wii
------Virtual Boy
------Gameboy-Color
------Gameboy-Advance

Sega

------Saturn
------Dreamcast
------Game Gear

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sony
-- PlayStation (PSX)
------ PlayStation 2
------------ PlayStation 3 *see below*
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*the PlayStation 3, XBOX 360, Wii U and the upcoming consoles from Sony and Microsoft.... there is not going to be an emulator capable of running any commercial games at a playable speed any time in the near/foreseeable future. Emulators such as RPCS3 will only run very few homebrew games and debug mode.*

I am at a total loss in this regard, have never used an emulator, always use the original systems. What can I say, I live in a cave and dress in varmint skins :freakout:

Do you use actual cartridges/discs or some sort of back-up hardware? I would be smothered in components if I used all original hardware lol... and I really only play 6 or so systems, still a LOT of cartridges to keep track of and switch between lol

Actual carts and discs, I have a seeet gameroom, a bit overcrowded, with desks and shelving, but manageable, the joy of living in a big old farm house.

Added some PlayStation (PSX) emulators, some additional info, cleaned up some of the other page's lists (to put the low-compatibility emulators more towards the bottom), and some updates (most notably for Project64).

I am trying to play KOEI's Romance of the three kingdoms III. I think it was an NES game. There are dozens of NES emulators?? I have no idea where to start. Can you recommend one?

Romance of the Three Kingdoms III: Dragon of Destiny is for SuperNintendo, SegaMegaDrive (Genesis) and PlayStation consoles. For the SNES version I would personally recommend either BSNES if you have good hardware and want very-accurate emulation; otherwise ZSNES or SNES9x. As for a NES emulator, I personally use FCEUX, JNES, and NEStopia and they all 3 have fairly high compatibility.
