Droid X

Postby Guest » Tue Aug 03, 2010 8:17 am

I will be getting the Droid X from Verizon later on this week (Thursday or Friday).
I am beyond excited. Right now I have a contract with Sprint and own the Samsung Rant phone (piece of $hit) but my family decided to get a family plan and so I will be paying the $80 early cancellation fee and begin my new life with a Droid X.

Ahhh. FINALLY IT CAME! Actually I have had my droid for a few days now and have had the time to fiddle and play with it. First off, this phone is a BEAST. The screen is 4.3" and is almost scary to look at. Im not going to waste my time reading off the specs of it as you can watch the youtube video below to see a great review. This is just my general impression and little things that ive come across.

Honestly, there isnt much to complain about with the phone itself. Its really snappy and can handle alot of things going on. The integration with google being gmail and also bringing in twitter, facebook, myspace, and all sorts of other social features, allows you to stay in the loop all the time. Or stalk people with ease, your choice. As soon as I added my facebook and gmail accounts to the phone (it asks for your gmail on the initial setup) it loaded my phone book with all my contacts numbers automatically which was AWESOME. I still had to go back and add some that were only on my previous phone and also add the home phone numbers since most people dont list those on their facebook. The day after I got the phone I rooted it, which if you dont know is comparable to jailbreaking with the ipod touch/iphone. Before doing this I came across some information stating that tampering with the inner workings of this phone is a big no-no. The phone is built with "e-fuse" which if any of the phones software is tampered with and messed up at all, like trying to root it, e-fuse will execute and go back and corrupt the bootloader, thus BRICKING THE PHONE! Come on, thats freaking dumb. Thankfully, the phone has already been rooted and tested and so it was safe for me. Its actually quite easy and right now is pretty much a 1 click operation. Needless to say, its rooted which gives me full control over my android phones, just like i should have from the beginning. The next thing I noticed was that alot of people comment on the battery life being so good...? I didnt think it was all that great. I struggled to make it to the end of the day with a full charge. To note though, the phone is always in contact with your accounts (facebook, gmail, myspace) and is syncing status to your phone and news. The internet connection is enough to drain any phones battery so I guess I understand. Once I rooted the phone though I was able to alter how the processor runs. The phone is factory set to run at all times at 1Gh, which is full steam ahead. Rooting the phone allows you to alter what times your phone is running full steam and other options. Upon editing that and playing with it, ive been able to get my phone to last a day and a half with moderate use. SUCCESS!

Onto other observations. The speakers are pretty darn good. I have not put any music on yet but the ring tones ive downloaded are quite clear and can be very loud. The inbox (text messaging) has an enormous size.... I dont know how many it can hold. I have over 1000 incoming and outgoing text and it still hasnt deleted anything. I looked on the internet and read the manual for documentation as to how big it is..Nothing. So thats absolutely fantastic. The txt messages do not have the ability to "lock" a message which I though was odd. Many people have referred me to the android market app "Handcent" which is free and that took care of that problem. Its a very customizable messaging app and thats what I use now.

Hmm. Ive already found out how to download paid apps for free, so thats kinda nice. PM me if you wanna know the specifics. Overall Its a wonderful phone. Its running Android v2.1 currently. The Droid 2, the phones just released which is comparable to the original Droid, is running Android 2.2 aka Froyo. The new version should be release here soon, hoping for next month and has some new upgrades to it. Makes it run a little smother and like all updates, fixes things and is supposed to make it better. I was almost temped to trade in my Droid X for the Droid 2 because the D2 has a slide out keyboard, but it is also missing some things too. So I kept the DX.

Thats is my horribly unorganized and long quick review of my Droid X. Feel free to ask me anything and Ill tell you what I know

it handles pretty good. i didnt mention i've already downloaded and emulated the nes and snes on the DX. The site overall handles well but i do have a little trouble with the reply boxes. if i turn to landscape i don't. On the ipod touch i didn't have this problem. its weird. in fact im using my dx right now and probably will alot cause i can get my emails on this too :shh:
