HOW TO| Attach a Second cord to an NES controller

Postby Dragon Mech » Sun May 20, 2012 2:40 pm

Hi everyone!

here is what you will need to attach a second cord to an NES controller:

soldering iron
solder
2 NES controllers
a small philips head screw driver
a vice of some sort
a pair of tweezers
needle-nosed pliers
two steady hands :)

ok first things first
use the philips head screw driver to remove the six screws from the back of Both of the controllers.
when you remove the back you will see something like this
:
the_wires.jpg

Note:the screws may have some rust on them and may also be very hard to remove.
now, you will need to put one of the circuit bords in a vice verticaly like this:
vise setup.jpg

this will make it easier to detach the wires from the board.
now, heat the solder on one of the wires while at the same time useing the needle-nosed pliers to gently
pull the wire out. continue to do this untill you have removed all of the wires.
Note: you will only need to do this with one of the controllers.
ok so,your wire ends should look like this:
the wires2.jpg

now take the second controller board and set it up in your vice like this:
before.jpg

now, add a little solder to the solder that is holding the wires to the board useing only enough to attach the
second set of wires to the board. now for the hard part, heat the solder of one of the wires on the board and use the tweezers to hold the second wire as you solder the second set of wires to the circuit board.
you will need to solder the same color wires to each other. if you don't you will risk damaging the controller
or worse, the NES it's self.
make sure that you get the second set of wires is as close and as flat to the board as possible.
this is what your board should look like:

to be continued........

ok, now that you have done all of this hard work you will need to make a new hole for the second cord to go through when you close up the controller. i suggest that you do it this way:
wire routing.jpg

please note that from this view that the second cord is under the circuit board.
i used my soldering iron to melt a rough hole in the top of the front of the controller case and finshed shaping the hole with a small knife. i made the hole slightly smaller than the cord so that the cord wouldn't
be so easy to move but you may want to put a small amout of hot glue on the wires to help hold them in place.now you may close up the controller and replace the screws.
your finshed controller should look like this:
finshed.jpg

it doesn't matter which cord is pluged in to which port.
this mod will not work with all games.i tried this mod with Super mario bros in two player mode. i could control mario just fine but i couldn't move luigi. i also tried this mod on Golf and i could control both players perfectly.i would have tried this mod with other two player games but i only have the two, sorry.
i did this exact same mod with a sega genesis controller when i was 17 or 18 and it worked great.
i was able to to play the two player mode in sonic 2 with both sonic and tails at the same time.
please don't ask me to post any pictures of the genesis controller because i sold the system many years ago.
if you have any questions about this mod, please feel free to ask but post them here so that everyone can
benifit from the questions and the answers. See Ya! :D
