Intel AT above board

Postby Bumcake » Mon Nov 14, 2011 12:01 am

Hi, can anybody help me shed some light on how to configure the Intel above board that came with our IBM 5170.
Can anyone tell me if these chips are 64k or 256k, I thought they were 64k but not sure, I have some info for the board and the corresponding dip settings are but I just cant get the damn thing to configure properly...

running out of hair :freakout:

Hi,

That looks like a memory add on board for the pc. Can you tell me what the standard ram in the 5170 is at the minute. 512kb or 640kb?

The dram's are probably 16 or 32kb each allowing the pc to go to 1mb or 2 mb.

I will look into this further for you. In the meantime please send me more details. I might even have replacement chips for the board.

Hi,

Righto....Houston we have a problem :(

The XT has 512k fitted (piggyback ram), with the AT board fitted this rises to 640k, so far so good.

Now for the life of me I couldnt get Dos to see the extended ram that is in the 2 banks on the Intel board, so fed up I went for a long sulk :D

So chris (my son) decided to remove the ram chips as there are 2 brands fitted NEC & MT and re socket them one at a time.

Turns out that all but 2 MT chips are kaputt :( but all the NEC are working :) Dos is reporting a whopping 256k extended memory for the 16 chips fitted and they passed the Intel diagnostic, does that sound right to you?

It would be nice to max out the ram as upto now this has been the only hiccup....well apart from the fitting of a 3.5 drive and the "why cant it format a 1.44 floppy fiasco"....I'll check bios limitations in the future

OK, the ram total still seems a little low. The 5170 had the ability to access up to a whopping 16mb which was quite a lot for those days. The Intel 80286 was cutting edhe when the 5170 was released.

The main motherboard probably was shipped with 512kb but was upgraded to 640kb on board. The expansion board that you have sounds like it should allow at least 2-4MB of additional ram.

Can you tell me how many sockets are on the expansion card?
How many chips are installed?
What the computer memory is with and without the expansion board fitted?

It seems that the chips installed are very small indeed.

Hi, Right I've been fiddling pretty much all day, I found some info on the board here.

http://th99.dyndns.org/i/I-L/52506.htm

I've set the jumpers up as described the fitted 18 NEC chips are still only coming up at 256k total, so either thats all they are or I'm cocking it up somewhere.
