No input response in MAME

I installed MAME about a week ago and have been using it every day since. I've been using an Xbox 360 controller for my input device. It's been working fine until today.

The roms load up fine, but I am currently getting no response from my 360 controller or keyboard. The only button I get a response from is the tab button which brings up the options menu, but I can't move the cursor up and down on the menu and I can't select any of the options.

Any idea what the problem could be?

could be that your ini files got corrupted. remove all the ini files in the in directory + mame.ini in the mame Directory.
