Newbie to MAME32

I consider myself to be fairly computer savvy but MAME sure tested my knowledge. Anyhow, most games use the directional arrows but I cannot figure out which character on the keyboard is the fire/action/jump button. I hit tab to see the layout but I never see anything as far as fire/action/jump. Are there any PC joysticks that are compatible with MAME?
