Tales of collecting vintage computers

Postby crustyasp46 » Wed Sep 10, 2014 3:43 pm

I do the usual collector searching for items of interest to me. Kijiji, Craigslist, yard sales, and freecycle, Goodwill, Value Village, and junk stores. There are no real shops dealing with vintage computers or gaming in my area. I mostly stay away from EBay, except to get a wish rush.

I don't do yard sales or the regular areas of where you may pick up a vintage item on a regular basis, just doing this occasionally when the bug is biting my butt. When I do stop somewhere whether it be a shop or a yard sale, I always ask if they have any old computer or gaming items, explaining that I collect old computers and gaming systems and anything to do with them, books, peripherals etc. Sometimes you get lucky, but most times people look at you like you have three heads with each having a third eye.

About a month ago I was fortunate enough to get lucky at a yard sale where there was a sealed box of 50 3.5 disks on a table. I was going to leave them as I have 3.5 disks coming out of my ying yang. But that " you never know, you may need those " thought flitted through my mind. Naturally I took them, and asked if they had any other old computer stuff.

An older genleman ( Bill ) came over to me and explained that he was cleaning up the estate of his brother, and that he had some computer stuff in storage mostly books, but some printers and disks and other stuff. I told him I would be interested and he took my name and phone #.

It was about two weeks ago that I received a phone call from Bill asking if I was still interested in the computer stuff and I said I said I was. He stated that he was near completion of sorting and he would be back in touch to make arrangements with me to pick the stuff up. The stuff was in storage about a 2 1/2 hour drive from where I lived. I told him that to help save him moving everything twice, I would not mind picking the stuff up where it was stored, as it would give my wife and I a day out. He told me he would get back to me on that.

I asked then what kind of price he had in mind, and he simply replied that he was having an auction to sell the estate items, and most were Army related Items. Vintage military radios and electronics and did not think that computer types would be drawn to the auction. Then totally floored me by saying I could have it, as I was the only one who had expressed interest in the computer stuff.

He phoned me back early last week saying I could pick the stuff at the storage place on Sunday. To bring my own boxes as he had use for Off we went, the wife and I on Sunday, boxes loaded and ready to repack what was there.

Some of the " stuff " Tandy hard disk controllers x2, Tandy 10 meg disk system, Books, manuals, printed material by owner, 5.25 program disks, 3.5 program disks , modems, printers, Vic 20, and a box of boards, motherboard, sound cards, cables etc.

As I am in the process of packing and moving at the 1st of Oct., Pics will have to wait until after the move.

I would like to say a big Thank You to Bill Smith for his kind generosity :!: :thankyou:
