CPU Word Length

The maximum number of bits the CPU can handle at once with its hardware and instruction set. This is the thing one refers to when mentioning, for instance, that the PDP-8 is a 12-bit machine, while the Jupiter Ace has an 8-bit CPU.

Computer Compatibility
Standards, either software or hardware, that computers adhere to. Have a look at this if you're trying to research how many computers used a certain operating system like CP/M, or some hardware standard like the S100 bus.

Thanks Crusty. :goodpost:

There is much more to come. It is sad that the machine room has gone. There is so much missing on wayback. On the bright side, I am trying to contact the webmaster to see if he has any remnants of the site that I could acquire. Am thinking if I could acquire some of his material not on wayback, of trying to mirror his site on a small one of my own. It is the best site to date that I have found for information on retro computers. :D

Hey guys, I'm the webmaster in question, and I've just been convinced to bring back the site (in a more modern form though). It's good to know someone still finds this info useful, so watch this space!

Had a very good conversation with Vincula on Google+ today and as he said he will be bringing The Machine Room back on line. :thankyou: Stay tuned, but unfortunately this also means I can no longer hijack any more of his excellent work to post here. Vincula has given permission to leave the information posted, here. :good:

You can whet your curiosity a bit for what his offerings may look like when he is up and running at :

I love this information and it is of real importance to people who genuinely are trying to preserve the history. Would you consider recreating it at this site within a dedicated section that you would be the curator of Vincula. I would love to have someone like yourself working here with us. I loved the machine room and spent many hours browsing the info within.

Maybe we can make a subdomain for you. Please give this some thought, I could cover all costs if you were willing to maintain the section.

Just an idea, thanks for letting Crusty keep the information posted.

Thank you for the offer! I have no lack of storage space or hosting (it's my job!). What I really lack (because of said job) is time, being on call 24×7.

I really shouldn't have let the Machine Room go, but I went through some really ugly personal stuff between 2005 and 2006 and personal projects were the last thing on my mind. My retro freakery has been steadily recovering since, and the Machine Room has always been on my mind. I've had friends on Facebook message me out of the blue saying I should bring it back.

I had a good look at the source today. The major issues were all PHP deprecations (that damned PHP) since the code was so old! I've managed to fix them, and you'll find the site is in more or less working order right now!

Have a look here:

Code: Select all
http://machine-room.bedroomlan.org

It's not very interactive, but you can still get to all the information!

Looking at the code was an enlightening experience. The whole thing was made from scratch! The only ready-made code I used was the database layer. Some of the code is actually pretty generic and framework-like and makes pretty impressive use of the XML source material (all of the info is in a custom-made XML format and the site just draws information from that). Ah, the misspent intelligence of youth! :D

The scariest thing is that it only took 45 minutes to fix the PHP issues and bring the site to this state.

The next step is to modernise it and re-add the interactive, social features.

Had a visit to The Machine Room, looking good! Now have an excuse to spend hours doing "research" and between TOC and TMR, and wayback, can never say I am bored, not that boredom has ever been much of a factor in my life.

That was a quick transition from inactive to active. Congratulations.

PS: edited your link and put it Inside

, as it is the policy of TOC for outside links.

Looking forward to your fully functional site.
