How does this site exist?

Postby arinlares » Tue Feb 02, 2010 7:51 am

One thing I've been wondering about this site is how it can exist without getting beaten to a bloody pulp by companies claiming copyright infringement. I can only assume it's been around for a while, as there are people here (or at least in the other forum) boasting to have come here for a long time. How is this possible? Just staying low-key?

To be honest it is a number of things.

1. This site is not run for profit in any way. Quite the opposite in fact :(
2. I stay away from any systems that are not considered defunked. There are no current or even semi current system roms on this site. We still dont have PS roms yet and probably wont for a while.
3. I truly believe that hosting and presenting old format rom images is the only real way to preserve the gaming history. Over the years I have received many emails from younger members that never heard of a Magnavox for example, these gamers need to see where the industry started. A lot of them prefer the older games.
4. When asked (and I have been) to remove a prticular rom for copyright reasons I always comply. The last thing I wish is to harm a company still making revenue from old formats. In fact where possible I have helped these companies/individuals to promote their game.
5. The site has been around since 1999 and I hope it will be around in years to come.

What roms have they asked you to take down.
I can see both sides of the copyright but I just wish that all those angry people who are against infringement would just look at the site cause Im sure most of them would find a game they would remember on here somewere ;)

Here I was thinking there was some sort of trick (find a host in a copyright-lenient country, and hope for the best). Thanks, Hot Trout!

The Old Computer has shields and barriers from incoming proton lasers from massive companies, whenever there's trouble they use the hyper jump to high tail it outta there.
