HOW TO: Install and Use Zandronum and Doomseeker

Postby Kherr » Tue Feb 14, 2012 8:58 pm

Instructions on installing and using Zandronum/Doomseeker to play DOOM, DOOM 2, HEXEN, HERETIC, and STRIFE...... ONLINE (Windows)

This used to be a guide to setting up Skulltag 98d. However, Zandronum 1.0 is identical in it's GUI seeing as it was created by the former Skulltag team. Anywhere in the pictures where you see "Skulltag" just know that it is now "Zandronum."

Alright, you'll need to download Zandronum first: DOWNLOAD ZANDRONUM!

Once you've downloaded it, you'll simply just install it. Double click the installer you just downloaded and run it. All you should have to do is keep clicking next until it's done. If it asks at any point if you'd like to install a program called "Doomseeker" say yes, that's the online client that handles finding and playing Zandronum online with other people. Once this is done, we'll need to configure it.

Instructions for the configuration of DOOMSEEKER

Alright, open Doomseeker, it's a big red "D" icon on your desktop. Once here, you'll need to navigate to the "options" menu, and then "configure." It'll look like this:

Locate the folder labled "File Paths" above the "Wadseeker" entry. Click on it, and it will bring up the pathways on the right side of your configuration box. It'll look like this (NOTE that my File Path is already modified):

File Paths

Notice on the right that the only file path I have is: "C:/users/Kherr/Documents/Skulltag Wads"

YOU WILL NEED A FILE PATH/DIRECTORY SIMILAR TO THIS!

Instructions for changing WAD/PK3 file directories in Doomseeker on Windows

Ok, now you'll need to create an alternate directory for Wadseeker (part of DOOMSEEKER) to download WAD/PK3 files to, and for these files to reside in especially if you're using Windows 7 because it seems to have issues preventing you from saving files directly to folders in the "Program Files" folder.

To do this is simple, just navigate to your "Documents" library (Windows 7) or "My Documents" (Vista and XP) and create a new folder labled anything you want (I used the folder name of "Skulltag Wads"). Once you've got this folder created, go back into Doomseeker's configuration window and navigate back to the "File Paths" option (if you closed it) and "ADD" this directory to the list. Just click ADD on the bottom right of the window and navigate to that new folder you created labled "Skulltag Wads" and then click Ok. It will add your new directory to the list of directories that Doomseeker is using. Now, remove all other directories. It's as simple as clicking once on the other directory that is in there, and then clicking Remove. Once you're done, it should look something similar to this:

Now you're done with this part. Now we need to configure "Wadseeker" so that it also uses this new directory. This part is simple. Just click on the little triangle dropdown option next to wadseeker and it will open all of the options for wadseeker's configuration. The only one we're worried about changing is the "GENERAL" section. Click it. It will open the configuration settings for "General" on the right. You'll notice there is a drop box with the caption above it being: "Directory where wadseeker will put wads into." You'll need to change this to your folder labled "Skulltag Wads" too. This is simple, just click inside the box and delete what's in there. Then, locate your "Skulltag Wads" folder again and copy it's directory. It should be either:

"C:\users\<your account name>\Documents\Skulltag Wads" for Windows 7"

- or -

C:\Documents and Settings\<your account name>\My Documents\Skulltag Wads" for either Windows Vista or Windows XP.

Alternatively, you can also just copy and paste this directory. Just open that folder labled "Skulltag Wads" and in the address bar above just click it to the right of all the text, in the white area, and then just copy the whole string and paste it into this box in doomseeker's configuration. When you're done, the configuration should look something like this:

Wadseeker Directory

AND THAT'S IT! You're done! Just click "APPLY" and the "OK" and your new settings are good. MAKE SURE YOU CLOSE DOOMSEEKER AND THEN RE-OPEN IT TO ENSURE THE SETTINGS STICK. Once this is all done, you can now move that pesky "DOOM2.wad" file into your new directory and skulltag will see it perfectly! Enjoy playing DOOM online!

DON'T FORGET! This program can also play: HERETIC, HEXEN, and STRIFE in glorious OPEN GL! OH! If your computer struggles to run Zandronum, or you're experiencing a lot of lag during online matches, and you've already lowered your resolution to an alarmingly low state, you can always play in software mode. To change from Hardware to Software mode all you have to do is either:

IN GAME

Navigate through the options to "Set Video Mode" and then to the "render" option above and select "Software" NOT "Hardware" and then it will tell you that you have to re-load skulltag in order for the effects to take place. Exit the game, and then the next time you load the game it will be in software mode, disabling all of the OPEN GL features. But this is fine, as long as you can get some good FPS. :3

OUT OF GAME

THIS ONLY WORKS WHEN YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE GAME! So if you only have DOOM 2, then this will not work. If you have Ultimate DOOM and DOOM 2, then this will work.

Just simply open the "Zandronum" icon in the installation path for Zandronum. It looks like a robotic head. It should say something like "Play Offline" or "Play Single Player." I would suggest making a shortcut on your desktop, and you can re-name it to just "Zandronum" if you wish, that's what I did. Anyway, just open this and it will pop-up a box asking which game you want to load. At the bottom of this box, there are options. One of them is Hardware/Software. Just click "Software" and then click "Play Zandronum" and that's it. It will load into "Software" mode and then you can just exit the game. It will always load into software mode from this point further.

OK! That's it for sure!

Happy Fraggin' :freakout:

Thanks, but that guide is out of date since the newest release does NOT do Mega Man 8-bit DeathMatch (MM8DM). This guide is current. I appreciate the input though! :D

:bump:

Updated "How To" for Zandronum. Fixed a couple of issues. Changed all non-required instances of Skulltag to Zandronum. Updated the Download link to be Zandronum instead of Skulltag.

Etc., etc., etc.
