i'm having some trouble with SimTower for windows in Windows 3.1. simtower is corrupting its own save game files. it doesn't corrupt them when it creates the files, it only corrupts them when it overwrites the files to save any new changes to the game. however, i don't have this problem with simtower when i run it with win2k. i'm not running win 3.1 in any emulator. instead, i'm using my win2k computer (
viewtopic.php?f=37&t=285&p=11294#p11294 ) with some slight modifications (192MB of ram reduced to 64MB. which is the maximum amount addressable by MS-DOS 7.1 and win 3.1x.) to run win 3.1 from a 10GB HDD with MS-DOS 7.1 as its base. i need to know if i need to get a different copy of the installer for simtower or if i need to reconfigure the HDD or use a different drive or what.

Try reducing max ram to 16mb even that was massive in win3.1 times.

will that be enough for games like quake to run ? also, i found a way to work around the problem. instead of trying to overwrite previously saved games, i just create a new save game file each time i want to save and name it slightly different each time(t1.tdt, t11.tdt, t12.tdt...etc)

Back in the day of i486 CPU's, 8MB to 16MB was huge. The average PC had 4MB and DOOM was created to run in 1MB. 16MB also keeps your highram to a more normal size and should make the platform more stable.

i'm not running just doom and win 3.1 on the win31/msdos71 setup. i'm also running Quake and the mod Alien Quake. i'm also running nes, snes,gb(c) and C64 emulators. plus other games like Dark Forces and Tie Fighter. i'll try 32MB of ram and i'll have to reconfigure EMM386 to reduce the EMS memory.

i did what you suggested HT, and i reduced the amount of ram i was using (i did a step down test. going from 64MB to 48MB > 32MB > 16MB. ) . this had no effect on saving games with simtower. however, i did learn that how big of a heap quake can load is directly related to the amount of EMS memory that is avalible. for example, if i have 32768KB of EMS memory (half of 64MB of ram), quake loads a 30.6 MB heap. but if my EMS memory is set to 8192KB (half of 16MB of ram), quake only loaded a 6.4MB heap. this was a informative experiment and one i would not of done if you hadn't of made your suggestion. thanks.
