Dragon Mech's new computer

Postby Dragon Mech » Mon Jun 24, 2013 3:25 pm

i'm finally getting a modern computer soon. crusty is sending me an HP media PC with an AMD Phenom X4 9500 quad core processor clocked at 2.2GHz loaded with Ubuntu 13.04 (Lubuntu 13.04). it's also supposed to be a 64 bit system. once it arrives i'll post the complete specs.

i plan on trying to setup a dual boot with Ubuntu and a 64-bit version of WIndows 7 (hopefully either Pro or Ultimate). that is if i can find a non OEM version (and the cash to buy it :P ). the computer dosen't come with a monitor but i have a standing order with a local pc repair shop for a used CRT model when they get one in. oh and here are a couple more specs of the computer.
HD : Seagate Barracuda 360 GB 7200 rpm
it also has these slots on the front for accessing additional data storage media:
Compact Flash
SM/XD-Picture
SD/MMC
MS/MS-Pro
and it does have a DVD-ROM drive.

crusty told me monday that he plans to ship the computer this week. but in the mean time, i've bought a used LCD monitor at a local pc repair shop for about $70. had to sell a few things to get the money but i'm glad i did.
the monitor is a NEC MultiSync 1770NMX flat panel LCD monitor with 2 video input ports, 1 standard VGA and 1 DVI. it also has a 4 port usb hub built in as well as removable speakers that are powered by the monitor itself. here are some pictures of it:

the last picture is of the backside of the speaker bar that is under the screen. i did test the screen on my win2k machine and everything works well. i wasn't able to test the DVI port because i don't have a video card with DVI output. i did get a notice from the on screen menu that the monitor is best used with 1240x1024 resolution. i have the new monitor setup on the left side of my CRT monitor for now but i may switch them around if the new computer becomes my main rig. hopefully my new computer will come sometime around the middle of next week.

Update:

by using the tracking number provided by crusty. i found out as of early saterday morning, my computer was processed in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. which is just west of Chicago O'Hare International Airport. (the location of elk grove village was gotten from google maps.) i can estimate that i should receive my computer either monday/tuesday(if it was loaded on an airplane at O'Hare) or wednesday/thursday(if loaded on a truck.). on a lighter note, i did receive a smaller package saterday that was mailed at the same time as the computer. because of it's smaller size and weight, it came buy standerd means. the smaller package contained two AC adaptors for serial dial-up modems that crusty suggested i use with linux on my current computer. the modems are in the same box that the new computer is in.
