Dave Heiner, Vice President & Deputy General Counsel, Corporate Standards & Antitrust Group, Microsoft, says, "We have taken this step because Motorola is attempting to block sales of Windows PCs, our Xbox game console and other products. Their offense? These products enable people to view videos on the Web and to connect wirelessly to the Internet using industry standards."
Microsoft which has been running an extortion racket forcing every Android maker to pay a reportedly huge amount for a tiny and undisclosed amount of patents is complaining that Motorola is asking too much. Let's listen it from the wolf:
"Unfortunately, Motorola has refused to make its patents available at anything remotely close to a reasonable price. For a $1,000 laptop, Motorola is demanding that Microsoft pay a royalty of $22.50 for its 50 patents on the video standard, called H.264. As it turns out, there are at least 2,300 other patents needed to implement this standard. They are available from a group of 29 companies that came together to offer their H.264 patents to the industry on FRAND terms. Microsoft’s patent royalty to this group on that $1,000 laptop?"
According to reports Microsoft assumingly asks for $15 per Android devices. Now $22.50 for a $1000 laptop is unfair but $15 for a $400 devices fair? Which means by simple mathematics Microsoft is asking for around $37 for $1000 device.
Nice job Microsoft when it comes to signing bogus patent deals with Android players its NDA but when an Android wants Microsoft or Apple to pay its FRAND.
Now, who should be crying foul here?
