As I began to write this I checked the stats at the bottom of the page, there were 237 users on line 8 registered and if the bots are ( as they seem to be ), counted as registered, there were only four registered users. As frustrating as the download speeds are, there is no telling what others are downloading or the size of the download. The more users, the slower the connection.
As I see it the site is between a rock and a hard place trying to satisfy everyone who comes to the site. Unregistered users download, registered users download, unlimited members download. This causes the server to slow.
We allow this because in the end the hope is that donations will increase to an extent that the servers can be upgraded to carry heavier loads. HT, has commented before that if everyone that uses the site donated just one cent to the site, we could have a server that could cater to everyone the way the site is envisioned to operate.
Slow speed is frustrating to everyone, and I wish I could offer a solution. The only suggestion I could make would be to limit unregistered users to possibly less access to the download area, allowing them to see what the site offers, and then making them at least put the effort in to register. Easing the burden on the server. It is a juggling act at the best of times, trying to attract for more donations, to try to make the site better. But also trying to appease the paying members. and try to avoid the frustration you are feeling at the moment.
I still think, personally, it is the best site on the web for everything retro in regards to systems offered, roms offered, emulators, etc.
It is easy to be critical, but the other great great thing about the site, we always are open to suggestions for improvement.
This is not meant to offend anyone, and possibly I should not have expressed my thoughts, but I thought this should be explained as I see it. I could be wrong.
