I am no expert but I would use the linux ubuntu, You could then download winex emulator to run a lot of the windows games you may have, linux is much more stable than windows and if you run into problems you can find solutions a lot easier. I have spent the larger part of the past few days researching linux because i want to get totally away from windows. I can"t offer much help other than suggest linux.

Well I guess it kinda depends on what your looking for. I have a friend that dual boots his desktop with windows/ubuntu. Sometimes Linux requires some computer knowledge for how to get things to work. But theres are plenty of communities including this one to answer questions you may have.

Personally I would go with Ubuntu. It lets you get away from some of this proprietary crap that everyone forces you to use and sticks you in a whole new(ish) world opens up for lovely customization.

I dont think you have to pay for any linux setup unless you order a install CD or something.
