A patch can be applied to a Mario 64 rom and played in an emulator for same-screen coop game play. It is also supposedly playable online through kailerra or another netplay option for emulators. Also at the link 'Super Mario Star Road', a patch that adds many new levels, stars, and music.

Also for those interested in patches for Mario 64, here is a link to another good one 'Super Mario 64: The Missing Stars'. This one I believe needs to be manually patched (similar to the Goldeneye 007 packs)

great game but too complicated...record missing after get 105 stars on NDS...

Nice review. I only play 3DO games on an emulator, but like yu i like their feel. Thanks for the recommendations on Road Ras and Wing Commander, will definitely follow up.
