Emulating a 1541 Floppy Drive

Hi All,

I was lucky enough to get a Commodore 64 for Xmas, but the couple of tape based games it came with are not that reliable at loading. I'm quite keen to build up an archive of my favourites from 25 years ago - but I cannot find any definitive anwers on how best to emulate a 1541 Floppy Drive using a PC.

Is anyone doing this, and what are the recommendations?

As far as I can make out, I possibly need a cable called "XE1541" and some free software called 64HDD. Possibly not compatable with fast loaders, but will happily load numerous d64 files.

Any advice appreciated. I'm quite looking forward to revisiting lots of titles from back in the day.

Thanks in Anticipation.

An excellent Christmas present indeed. The C64 was one of my fav systems back in the 1980's. Everything you will need to get started is at the following link. There are lots of people making FDD and HDD to C64 connections. I also think I remember a USB Pendrive to C64 but I cant find the link now.

Enjoy.

Thanks. It is a great Christmas pressie. I'm just negotiating with the other half where it should fit - I think it should get pride of place on the shelves next to the TV, she thinks it should be confined to a cardboard box under the stairs.

I have an XE1541 cable on order, and have put together a DOS bootable USB key in anticipation. I quite like the idea of some of the 1541 hardware emulators as they may better support fast laders, but first I just need to see how many games load reliably using 64hdd.

Just need to find some archive sites now with games on them. Anyone got any useful links?

I wonder what happened too all my old gear . . . I guess it must have been chucked out by the parents in one of their clear outs.

At this point, I find myself here mostly for the community because I'm usually playing something like HL2 or Skulltag. World of Warcraft too when I get my account back up and running. :3

I don't really play my emulators anymore except to record the game music I'm getting. :3 (that and play Emerald Dragon because I couldn't before. :ugeek:)

I also find myself here to help HT along in his quest, in both moderation of this forum board, and for when I find ROMs and Emulators... I give them to him. :3
