Diablo 2 is definitely not a DOS game. Diablo 1 though is a different matter, it came out early enough (96 or 97?) that it might have a DOS version. I really don't know, sorry, the Google do nothing.

As for recommendations, pretty sure some mentioned did not have DOS versions (StarCraft, Planescape: Torment...). Anyway, I'm going to throw a bunch of games out there that I consider must plays and have not been mentioned. (Beware, very long list. RPG in bold)

Beneath a Steel Sky
Betrayal at Krondor

Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Comet
Conquests of Camelot: The Search for the Grail
Conquests of the Longbow: The Legend of Robin Hood
Crusader: No Remorse
Crusader: No Regret
Fallout
Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within
Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Succession Wars + The Price of Loyalty
I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow
Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos
Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards
Leisure Suit Larry III: Passionate Patti in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals
Leisure Suit Larry 6: Shape Up or Slip Out!
Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail!
Might and Magic: Clouds of Xeen
Might and Magic: Darkside of Xeen
Out of this World (aka. Another World)
Populous
Populous II: Trials of the Olympian Gods
Quest for Glory: So You Want To Be A Hero
Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire
Quest for Glory III: Wages of War
Quest for Glory IV: Shadows of Darkness

An excellent list of games and the majority of them I played at the time. xCom is an excellent mention as is Wing Commander series.

Nice one.

Wanted to throw out a fairly diverse list, I'm sure I left out a lot of classics though (Dungeon Keeper and Ultima Underworld are coming to mind).

I totally lost weeks to Dungeon Keeper and still have my original. It was a great game in every respect and I would urge everyone to play it. I wish they would remake it for today.

I spent days building massive dungeons, come to think of it it was like mine craft only with better game play.

I have such fond memories of this game, a real classic. Pity someone would not remake this.
