PlayStation Phone Out of the Bag

Could this device be a 3DS beater? Sony have combined PlayStation branding with a smartphone design.

Tech site engadget have posted a whole gallery full of pictures for what they claim is Sony’s next PlayStation handheld – a mobile phone. You won’t see any PlayStation logos plastered over the alleged prototype model – what gives it away are the triangle, square, circle, and cross buttons.

Image

As well as the pictures, engadget are being very confident when it comes to the details. They claim that the device is running the latest version of the Android operating system – although whether that’s 2.3 “Gingerbread” or 3.0 “Honeycomb” is unclear. Plus, it’ll be packing half a gigabyte of RAM and a Qualcomm 1GHz processor, as well as a gigabyte of internal storage.

If you’re wondering about that pill-shaped bar across the centre; no, those aren’t holes for the analogue sticks! It’s a touch pad, apparently, but features multitouch technology, so it could imitate two control pads.

This wouldn’t be the first time Sony have slapped another brand across their phones. The company used the thirty-year old Walkman franchise to sell Sony Ericsson mobiles with music capabilities. That strategy appears to have been a success.

How important is this for Nintendo and the 3DS? That hinges on two “if’s”; firstly, it is possible that this news might be an – admittedly very impressive – hoax.

Assuming it is real, the key issue is whether this machine is intended to serve as a phone with a PSPgo chucked in, or the “real” successor to the PSP. If it’s a version of Sony’s low-selling PSPgo remodel, then I would suggest that Nintendo have nothing to worry about. On the other hand, if this is a completely new console, then Sony will really mean business; and the fact that it’s also a smartphone sets them apart from Nintendo. Perhaps Sony are hoping to imitate the success of Apple’s iPhone?

I read about this the other day and should have posted it since I keep up with the Android Community so closely now having a DX and custom modding it. I think this thing is actually pretty awesome (assuming its real) but still needs some work. The top left has overlapping texts and thats not good, means theres still bugs. There also obviously isnt a slide out keyboard since its the gamepad

A couple more pics and another short description:

I'd get it as my next phone if it's real, I could play my PSP faves without having both a phone and PSP with me.

The real questions are:
1. Is it 3G or 4G
2. Which carrier is it on? (PLEASE not ATT)

Hopefully they won't be to expensive when they come out here, then maybe get this for me. And hopefully it will find a niche, and perform better than the Ngage

Behold, the PlayStation Phone: full Xperia PLAY specs, details released

phone.jpg

While the iOS ecosystem may have evolved slowly into a gaming powerhouse, Sony is hoping to quickly push its gaming platform onto phones with the upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY. This the "PlayStation Phone" that has been rumored to exist for a very long time, and the details are finally here. The Xperia PLAY is coming to the United States this spring on the Verizon network first; the price remains unannounced.

Still, just look at it: a cell phone that plays games well and has actual buttons! Be still our beating hearts.

The hardware

The system features a four-inch capacitive multi-touch screen running at 480 by 854 resolution, and you'll be able to play 3D games for an estimated five and a half hours. There will be both black and white hardware at launch. Here are the rest of the specifications:

Size: 119 x 62 x 16 mm
Weight: 175 grams
Phone memory: 400 MB
Memory card support: microSD™, up to 32 GB
Memory card included: 8GB microSD™
Operating system: Google™ Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
Processor: 1 GHz Scorpion ARMv7
Games will be delivered through the Android Marketplace, and the system will ship with Asphalt Adrenaline 6, Bruce Lee, Star Battalion, The Sims 3, and Tetris preloaded, along with a "legendary" PlayStation title. "More than 50 additional titles from top franchises at leading game publishers will be available for purchase at launch," the announcement states.

Sony is also very excited about the buttons on the device, calling them "dedicated gaming controls for real console quality gameplay, including four-way directional keys, recognizable ABCD keys with PlayStation iconography, left/right shoulder keys, and two analog touch inputs for joystick action."

Sony is promising 60fps playback of these games with the built-in Andreno 205 GPU, and over five hours of gameplay isn't bad. This is the phone that's really going to show off what Sony's PlayStation Suite is capable of, and may even make iPhone gamers jealous of those built-in buttons.

Seriously, have we noted that we like the idea of a phone with gaming controls?

This should give the Android platform a nice push into the world of gaming, and we're looking forward to getting our hands on a handset as soon as possible. Still, the pricing on games is going to be key, as iPhone games have carved out a strong niche with touch controls and low prices. Sony needs to be realistic about the cost of these titles, even on a new device.

Xperia Pro

Sony Ericsson just announced its latest business Android smartphone, aka the Xperia Pro. We had the opportunity to briefly get our hands on the device: the keyboard is very good (nice “click”, backlit…), and Sony Ericsson has improved the productivity by automatically acting depending on the context, for example, when you are reading your email, sliding the keyboard out will automatically set the reply mode, which you have to confirm. If you start typing text, the cursor will automatically be placed in the message edit box and you text will land in the right place. A few taps at a time, the Xperia Pro has the potential to increase productivity and make the process of emailing, a smooth one.

The Xperia Pro boasts a scratch resistant 3.7 inches FWGA (854×480 pixels) capacitive touchscreen, WiFi, DLNA, aGPS, HDMI out, USB 2.0, Exmor R camera sensor with good performances in low light conditions, and it comes with a 8GB micro SD memory card.
