I'm sorry but I have never had that problem (with iPad that is), only when trying to connect to a wifi point where I just changed the access password to gives me issues.
You can try several things:
* Is your wifi router sending out an SSID? If not: try it
* Do you have wifi enabled in you iPod (guess so)
* Is your wifi network broadcasting B or G network? (N is also okay if you check the bw. compatability option)
* Same counts for setting the 'radio mode' to the right receiving option (I found this online..)
* Have you tried upgrading your firm- and software to the latest version?
