Noob using MAMEs

For multiplayer MAME games like Punisher, TMNT, Simpsons, etc, is there a way to start off with players 2-4?

I'm using MAME4droid and Gridlee.

With those types of games, usually one or more of the clone roms will let you select from all the different characters. Eg. in the parent rom, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (World 4 Players) [tmnt], as player 1 you can only be Leonardo. In the clone rom, Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles (UK 2 Players, set 1) [tmht2p], as player 1 you can pick any turtle.
