Whats the best NES emulator and Controllers for Windows 7?

Postby MunkHead » Sat Sep 25, 2010 4:58 pm

My girlfriend was brought up on Nintendo NES in the 1980’s and 90’s and I want to buy her for Christmas a pair of NES USB controllers, a NES Emulator and as many ROMS as I can that will work on her Windows 7 laptop.

I know nothing about NES so please go easy on me. Whats the best:-

1. NES Emulator (preferable an idiot-proof one)
2. USB controllers x 2

And where can I get them from (links?) – any recommendations/suggestions please.

I thought NES controllers looked like this one? http://www.retrousb.com/product_info.ph ... ucts_id=32 (i know its cheaper elsewhere)

I have windows seven and I run SNES and NES emulators with no problem all the time.

Emulator:
The best NES emulator that I know of for widows is FCE-Ultra
If you have any problems with that let me know. If Jnes works for you thats fine also =]

Controller:
Honestly, I use a SNES controller to play NES and SNES because I love them both so much. But I really do understand the idea of the retro feel of an old NES controller.
Here is just one listing of the NES USB controller from:
Amazon for $14.37

If you would rather use SNES controllers so you can play more just let me know and Ill post more about that.
Hope the information helped!

Ahh goodie!

Well, honestly the benefits are pretty simple. With a NES USB controller, you will be limited to the NES system (or anything else that you can find that only uses a small amount of buttons).

By using a SNES controller instead, you can play more platforms with one controller because there are more buttons that can be mapped to the computer.

You go from
NES: Start, Select, A, B, D-Pad
to
SNES: Start, Select. A, B, X, Y, L, R, D-Pad

You can play everything the NES controller could and MORE! Pretty good id say.

Wait! Theres More!

By also using a SNES controller instead of NES you dont have to buy a straight SNES USB if your dont want to! You can actually use a legit Super Nintendo brand controller and just plug it into an adapter. Let me explain this a little bit:

I was looking on the net for you a NES adapter for the computer. Meaning, plug original (not NES USB, but NES with the old black plug on the end) into an adapter (Plug connecter to USB) and then you can use the controller that way. The problem I ran into was that, IT DIDNT EXIST! Not really anyways. I found a few but the cheapest adapter was like $25 and it was for a single controller. So you would have to spend $50 for 2 adapters and then get the controllers on top of that. Ugh.

With SNES, you CAN use an adapter because there are way more produced. I actually have one that is a 2 controller adapter so 2 people can play at once with original SNES controllers. How much did it cost? 12.49! WITH TAX. Pretty damn good I thought.

The adapter is Here. You can take a look but dont be afraid of buying from them. Its the same listing I used and ive had mine for a few weeks now and its pretty awesome. Browse around a little too and look at some of the stuff. Me and my brother were playing Super Contra on the big screen. Lots of fun.

ONE LAST THING!

I know this is a little long winded but you got me excited haha.
Have you ever been killed in a game? Have you ever died just as you were about to finish the level? Have you ever had the enemy down to the last few bars of health and then the monkey kills you with some cheap blow that should have been easily avoided? I HAVE. And what do I want to do when that happens? Break something obviously. The closest thing is the controller in your hands. Ive broken 1 before. Lucky me but just one.
Heres the part to listen to: Since the controller is not a SNES USB or NES USB which is a custom controller manufactured by other companies that you have to order from, you cant just go to the store quick and buy a new one! You have to find a new listing online, order, wait, pay shipping, yadadadadada on and on. What a pain.
Using an adapter makes it so you can run to a Gamers or Gamestop or GameCrazy (or whatever other franchise you have near you), any used game store, and get a used controller for pretty much dirt cheap. That was a quick and easy replacement. The NES system doesnt have an adapter that I could find other than the one I mentioned above, the SNES does.

So which set do you wanna buy?

Thank you
